The city is busing veterans from City Hall to the meeting Tuesday, March 20, 2012. In its commitment to curbing homelessness among military veterans, the City of El Monte and Mercy Housing, with support from veterans, has made tremendous progress in laying the foundation for the construction of a proposed 41-unit affordable rental housing project for homeless veterans with special needs. The project will not only offer housing for veterans, but will also provide important veterans support services, such as on-site property management, employment assistance, vocational training, veterans benefits counseling, and mental health support. This will be one of Mercy Housing’s permanent affordable housing projects for veterans and will be the first of its kind in the San Gabriel Valley.(Photo by Walt Mancini)
7 photo(s)
3/20/2012
Album ID: 1436070

Over the past 20 years, cities like Rosemead, San Gabriel, Alhambra and Temple City have shifted from working class white neighborhoods to Latino strongholds. USC researchers looking at Census numbers now say the number of Latinos is in significant decline across the West San Gabriel Valley as the number Asian residents continues to grow. But, where experts expected to see a Balkinization in the political arena, instead they've seen new coalitions formed.
The effect of these new coalitions will play out in the race for the 49th State Assembly seat, which is open this year as Eng has termed out. (Photo by Walt Mancini)
12 photo(s)
3/19/2012
Album ID: 1435776

Savannah Memorial Park, which contains the graves of many of Southern California's first pioneers, was recently named on California's Register of Historic Landmarks. In about 1846 Henry Dalton, owner of Rancho San Francisquito, found two graves on his property that were protected by a cactus hedge. He set aside two acres surrounding the graves for a cemetery. The location of the cemetery was desirable because the water table in other nearby areas was too high for burial purposes. Savannah Memorial Park is possibly the oldest protestant cemetery in Southern California and has been in continuous operation since its founding in 1850. Savannah Memorial Park served El Monte, the first American settlement in Southern California (California Landmark No. 975) and the end of the Santa Fe Trail, as well as surrounding areas. Savannah Memorial Park encompasses an area of slightly over four acres in size and there are more than 3,700 documented burials. Prior to construction of the trench, archaeologists are excavating the site to learn about the mission's people, industries and environment. This is part of ACE's outreach program to involve schools and also community members in the archeological dig site across from the historic San Gabriel Mission in San Gabriel. This was the first school visit and it was Washington Elementary School 4th and 5th graders in San Gabriel Friday, January 27, 2012. About 5-6 other days are planned for SGUSD schools to visit the site and learn about archeology and also what is happening at the actual dig, like what they are finding and the history of the region. There is also an in-school component (developed by PCC history Professor Eloy Zarate) where he and his wife go to the classrooms and talk to the kids before they go to the site about what is archeology and what does it mean in terms of getting history into the books they read in school. The curriculum and school visits, Eloy said, have been 3 years in the making. The collection is a near-complete archive of Thomas T. Eckert, the head of the military telegraph office of the War Department under Lincoln. The archive, which until recently was thought to have been destroyed, includes crucial correspondence that has never been published. “The Huntington is one of the premiere institutions for the study of the Civil War and is the repository of two of the so-called Big Five collections of Lincolniana, material by and about the 16th American president,” says David Zeidberg, the Avery Director of the Library. “The Eckert archive promises to add fresh insight into one of the most heavily mined scholarly subjects—the American Civil War.” (Photo by Walt Mancini)
7 photo(s)
1/27/2012
Album ID: 1403842

The community center in Baldwin Park last month completed its Solar Photovoltaic Power project, which will produce electricity for the facility. The solar array is comprised of more than 110 solar panels and offsets close to 10% of the center’s electricity usage. The Solar PV Power project will produce more than 40,000 kilowatt hours per year - the equivalent of planting 210 acres of trees and removing 55 cars off of the road over 10 Years. A successful career in graphic design supported a long and leisurely arts education at several schools, focusing on ceramics. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in California, Hawaii and Oregon and is in collections in the U.S. and Europe. As a maker of things, his artistic direction has always included using and repurposing whatever materials fit the need. Trained as a ceramic artist, his recent work includes mixed-media and assemblage. He has won a few awards, most recently Best in Show at Create/Fixate: 2009 and a grant from the City of Pasadena, and has been named one of the “Art Stars of California” by Art in California magazine.
